Shutters can be attractive and functional additions to any home, but just like any other fixture, they can acquire dust and grime over time. The good news is that cleaning your shutters can be easy when you follow the right maintenance tips.

3 Simple Ways to Maintain Your Shutters

Here are some simple techniques for keeping your shutters looking fresh and tidy:

  1. Dust regularly. The first step in maintaining your shutters is to dust them on a regular basis. Use a microfiber cloth or duster to gently wipe each slat or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. To avoid dust from accumulating on previously cleaned areas, work from the top of the shutter downward. Regular monthly or bi-weekly dusting will keep buildup to a minimum.
  1. Use a damp cloth for deeper cleaning. Dampen a microfiber cloth with water—or a light detergent solution for accumulated dirt—and carefully clean each slat. Make sure to wring out the towel properly to prevent additional moisture from dripping onto the shutters. This is especially important for wooden shutters, since excess water can damage them. To avoid wet marks and keep the shutters looking their best, always use a dry cloth afterward.
  1. Banish stubborn dirt. If your shutters haven’t been cleaned in a while, you might need to take cleaning a step further. You can do this by making a gentle cleaning solution of warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Dip a sponge or cloth into the solution, wring it thoroughly, and gently scrub the shutters. For hard-to-reach areas, you can use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush.
