At Evershade Blinds, we offer a wide range of window treatments to help you control the amount of light and heat that enters your space. In our experience, most people think of things like curtains, shades, or blinds when they think about window treatments, but in this article, we’d like to focus on a fourth category: shutters. Specifically, we will focus on plantation shutters, providing an overview of what they are and how they work.

What are plantation shutters?
Most people are familiar with shutters that attach to the outside of the home and are used either for decoration or for protecting the window glass in stormy conditions. Plantation shutters, on the other hand, are used primarily for light control, and they are mounted on the inside of the window frame. Each shutter panel can be opened or closed, and the panels also consist of slats which can be raised or lowered for even more precise light control.
How do plantation shutters work?
As we mentioned above, plantation shutters are designed to offer excellent light control. Each shutter panel consists of louvers or slats which can be opened and shut to let in light and air. In addition, the individual shutter panels can be opened to let in even more light. As the name suggests, the design of plantation shutters is based on historical shutters used in the South before the development of air conditioning. Some plantation shutters allow you to open the top panels for better air circulation while keeping the lower shutters closed to prevent prying eyes from looking inside your home.
